That marks a sea change from their troubled history, with carbon ofsetting and trading often failing to fulfll their early promise. Market-based solutions could have a critical role to play in achieving the deep emission reductions that scien- tists say are urgently needed, particularly for sectors like aviation that are difcult to decarbonize. With a growing number of gov- ernments and businesses making net-zero emissions pledges over the last year, carbon trading advocates are more positive than for several years.
