Pharmacological investigation of Eclipta alba as potent antibacterial agent.

Principal active compound of a well known Indian hepatoprotective herb, Eclipta alba was pharmacologically tested for antimicrobial studies. It is a traditional healer in various skin diseases. The in vitro antimicrobial activity of wedelolactone was evaluated using minimum inhibitory concentration and agar well diffusion method. The compound exhibited good activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella typhi. The MIC test showed the growth inhibition of S. aureus at a concentration of 20.0 micro g/ml, ZOI 9.14 mm and S. typhi at a concentration of 30.0 micro g/ml, ZOI 9.12 mm. Shigella flexneri and Pseudomonas aeruginosa were the most resistant bacterial strains. These results suggest wedelolactone as a promising antimicrobial agent.
