Effects of Botanicals on Maydis Leaf Blight of Maize in vitro

Efficacy of four botanicals such as Bel (Aegle marmelos L.), Neem (Azadirachta indica L.), onion (Allium cepa L.) and garlic (Allium sativum L.) was evaluated separately or in integrations of different concentrations against spore germination of Helminthosporium maydis. Incitant of maydis leaf blight revealed that all the tested individual plant extracts proved inhibitory against the spore germination of H. maydis ranging from 50 to 100% over the check depending upon their concentrations. However, extracts obtained from onion or garlic showed 100% inhibitory effect at the concentration of 0.2%. The combined effect of the mixing of extracts obtained from Neem, onion and garlic at concentration of only 0.2, 0.05 and 0.05%, respectively, showed the maximum (100%) inhibitory effect which was clearly followed in case of mixing of onion extract with garlic at the concentration of 0.1% each. On the other hand, extracts obtained from Neem at the concentration of 0.5% also showed similar response if it wasmixed with 0.1% concentration of either onion or garlic.
