We acknowledge that our retrospective survey regarding "safety" needle use in outpatient allergy patients has limitations. The questioning of certain possible biases is legitimate. Perhaps our survey results should not be generalized to all allergy practices, but they are surely specific to all practices that reported higher accidental needle sticks when using safety needles. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration' s current policy regarding safety needle use in outpatient practices was instituted in the absence of any directly relevant safety data. Likewise, approval of multiple safety devices without comparative safety trials further obscured the landscape
