Is the quest for polledness paying off?

Aresearch report titled Improving the Australian Poll Gene Marker Test and published in 2020 looked atthe change in horn status of 10 popular beef breeds between 2000 and 2018 among other things. The report was conducted by University of Queensland, Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation, CSIRO and Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA).While the comparisons were based on BreedPlan data from seedstock animals and so do not reflect changes in commercial cattle, the results did show breeds like Santa Gertrudis, Charolais, Limousin and Simmental have significantly increased the levels of polledness in their stud sires.
