Performance Enhancement at RCF Thai Over Past 3 Decades

RCF Thai unit is a gas based fertiliser and chemical complex and is one of the largest urea producers from a single location in India. This article provides details of RCF Thai's journey in last 3 decades and future plans to further enhance production and to reduce energy. RCF Thai was commissioned in 1985 with ammonia production capacity of 2700 MTPD at energy of 9.5 Gcal/MT and urea production capacity of 4500 MTPD at energy of 7.5 Gcal/MT. In 1996, ammonia production capacity was increased to 3000 MTPD with the energy of 8.9 Gcal/MT and corresponding urea capacity was increased to 5175 MTPD with the energy of 6.3 Gcal/MT. In 2011-12, ammonia production capacity was further increased to 3500 MTPD with the energy of 8.15 Gcal/MT and corresponding urea capacity increased to 6060 MTPD with the energy of 5.8 Gcal/MT. To keep pace with competition, RCF has again taken initiative to reduce urea energy to 5.1 Gcal/MT by 2020 without any change in production capacity. Specific raw water consumption was reduced from 7.9 M~3/MT to 6.1 M~3/MT of urea over the years and future action aims at further reduction to below 5 M~3/MT urea.
