Tohoku further delays nuclear restarts

Japanese utility Tohoku Electric Power will continue to rely heavily on thermal power generation and buying LNG after pushing back the target dates for restarting its Onagawa and Higashidori nuclear reactors by more than 18 months. Tohoku now plans to complete reinforcement work at its 825MW Onagawa No 2 reactor between October 2018 and March 2019. The company's previous target was April this year. It attributes the delay to extended safety checks by Japanese nuclear regulation authority the NRA on the unit's boiling water reactor (BWR) that began in December 2013.
