EU Commission publishes new advice on nanomaterials in cosmetics

The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS) has published new advice on the safety of nanomaterials in cosmetics. In a 5 October report, the committee says it reviewed previous inconclusive opinions on three nanomaterials widely used in cosmetics and found they posed potential consumer health risks. The substances are: colloidal silver (nano); styrene/acrylate copolymer; and synthetic amorphous silica materials – silica, hydrated silica and silica surface modified with alkyl silylates.
