European Commission Publishes Draft Advice For Dealing With Nanomaterials Under REACH

The European Commission has published the findings of a technical project that studied how nanosubstances should be dealt with in guidance on the implementation of the European Union's REACH chemicals legislation. The reports, which provide nonbinding advice, concern the identification of nanosubstances, how REACH requirements for information on intrinsic properties of chemicals can be fulfilled for nanosubstances, and how exposure to nanosubstances can be assessed in the context of REACH. The findings of the REACH Implementation Project on Nanomaterials (RIPoN) were made publicly available in three volumes Oct. 25. The Commission said the reports will be provided to the European Chemicals Agency "for possible implementation in the REACH guidance." However, it said there would be a delay before the report on nanosubstance identification is finalized because "it was not possible to reach consensus amongst the experts on the recommendations."
