BASF Petronas starts up HR-PIB plant in Malaysia

BASF Petronas Chemicals says it has produced the first on-spec highly reactive polyisobutylene (HR-PIB) in its new 50,000-metric tons/year plant at Kuantan, Malaysia. HR-PIB is an intermediate in the manufacturing of high-performance fuel and lubricant additives. It is also used in other industrial applications. “Our plant is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia,” says Sven Crone, managing director of BASF Petronas Chemicals. It “meets local market needs, supported by strong raw material backward integration,” he adds. The local market is growing quickly.
