India approves privatization of Bharat Petroleum

India’s cabinet committee on economic afairs, headed by prime minister Narendra Modi, has decided to sell the Indian government’s 53.29% stake in Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd. (BPCL; Mumbai), to a strategic buyer in what is expected to be one of the largest privatizations in the country’s history. However, BPCL’s 61.65% stake in Numaligarh Refnery Ltd. (NFL) in Assam State will be transferred to another state-owned energy company.
