In vivo estimations of muscling of Duroc and Pietrain boars compared with the postslaughter evaluations of their progenies.

The aim of this work was to determine the relationship between the slaughter value of Duroc and Pietrain boars estimated by a performance test and the slaughter value of their progenies evaluated after slaughter in meat production plants. The observations were carried out in a commercial farm producing F1 crossbred fattener (PLW x PL) sows sired by Duroc or Pietrain boars. 415 and 612 fatteners sired by Duroc and Pietrain boars, respectively, were slaughtered and the meat content of their carcasses were estimated using the Ultra-FOM 100 apparatus. A correlation coefficient (r) was used to estimate the backfat thickness of the boars and their offsprings postslaughter. The r values ranged from 0.28 to 0.39 and were slightly higher for Pietrain than Duroc combination. Low-level correlations were found between the performance test and postslaughter measurements in the loin eye height: r=0.08 (Duroc) and r=0.15 (Pietrain). On the other hand, Pietrain sires and their progenies (r=28) had a slightly higher meat content in their carcasses than Duroc sires and their progenies (r=0.22).
