CEP: a new beta(2) integrin ligand in inflamed tissue

In this issue of Blood, Yakubenko et al report on 2-(omega-carboxyethyl) pyrrolle (CEP), a lipid oxidation product generated by extravasated neutrophils within inflamed tissue, where CEP seems to serve as a guidance cue for infiltrating macrophages during the second wave of innate immune cell invasion by interacting with beta(2) integrins alpha(M)beta(2) (Mac-1) and alpha(D)beta(2).(1)
