Multiple Benefits Assessment of the Low Emission Development Strategies in Asia-Pacific Cities

It is well-recognised that Asia-Pacific is one of the key growth regions of the world, and also home to many large (and growing) cities. The increase of urbanization, as large numbers of people flood to the cities from the rural areas in search of greater opportunities, is putting pressure on cities' infrastructure and the ability to provide adequate services for the populace. Increasing levels of pollution due to traffic, industrial sources and fossil-based power and heating have further added pressure - particularly in developing countries where resources for solving such problems may be limited. Moreover, it is recognized that cities cause significant demand for materials and energy, and that cities are likely to feel the effects of climate change much more acutely due to their geographic structure and the urban heat island effect. Therefore, much policy development towards the mitigation of climate change has focused on cities.
