Capture of moving contour by stationary contour of a pattern

The present study analyzed perceptual interaction between stationary and moving contour. We found that, when a rotating cross-pattern was viewed through a slit with the identical cross form, the moving contour was perceived to be captured by the stationary contour. The effect of such capture was examined for various luminance contrast conditions of patterns. It was found that this effect strongly depended on the contrast relationship between stationary and moving contours. This characteristic of the dependency suggests that the capture effect is due to the coarse spatial resolution of motion pathway and the inhibitory interaction between stationary and moving contour.
