Driver behavior in case of emergency stopping of a forward vehicle is examined by our drivingsimulator experiment. The experiment consists of two situations: one case in which the drivers canpredict the emergency stopping and the other in which they cannot predict it. The effectiveness ofbrake warning of the forward vehicle is also investigated. It was verified that the critical headwaydistance and the mean deceleration vary with the predictable or the unpredictable situation, and thebrake warning is useful in avoiding a rear-end collision.
