Winter-hardiness and frost-resistance of modern winter wheat cultivars

The genetical sources of winter-hardiness and frost-resistance among modern winter wheat cultivars have been found. It is shown that on the background of a considerable air temperature decrease (-16 to -27 deg C), the majority of cultivars (more than 90%) which are tested in the State Strain Experimental Station, are middle and low winter-resistant. It results in essential yield losses. The losses in the yield of middle-resistant and low-resistant cultivars in comparison with frost-resistant ones, make up 17.4 to 25.5 and 53.0 to 89.7%, respectively. Therefore the cultivars which are offered for strain and have to be entered into the "Register of Plant Cultivars of Ukraine" require a strict control of their winter-hardiness and frost-resistance.
