Reaction of germinating seeds of maize to introduction of wheat prolamines

The reaction of germinating seeds of maize (Zea mays L.) to introduction of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) prolamines was studied in model experiments. The seedlings were cultivated at 20 and 12 deg C. In both variants, the wheat prolamines became degraded within two weeks to a state that could not he determined by SDS-PAGE. The maize prolamines also became degraded within two weeks at 20 deg C but at 12 deg C they were found out in the endosperm even on 26th day. The effect of introduction of wheat prolamines on growth of the maize seedlings was insignificant. The implantation of the "northern" type prolamines as adapters to more severe climatic conditions into the seed protein complex of maize may be used for a more successful selection of early maize varieties to extend the vegetation period under more favorable conditions.
