This study investigated the prevalence, antibiotics resistance and plasmid patterns of Salmonella Enteritidis on chicken meat samples (n = 578) collected over a period of 2 yrs from different retail outlets in a residential area of Namakkal City, South India. Salmonella Enteritidis was found in 92 of 578 samples (15.91%). Seasonal variations in prevalence patterns were identified with a higher prevalence occurring during the monsoon months (19.68%) followed by the post-monsoon (17.61%) and finally the premonsoon period. The isolates were resistant to >1 antibiotic, including those commonly used in poultry feeds, such as erythromycin, ampicillin, kanamycin, cephalothin and tetracyclin. All the isolates exhibited multiple antibiotic resistance (MAR) and contained >1 plasmid conferring antibiotics resistance. Plasmid size ranged between 0.43 and 115 MDa.
