Auto manufacturers are developing electric vehicles in response to public concern about global warming and carbon dioxide emission restrictions and to satisfy California' 5 requirement for zero-emission vehicles, which signals the beginning ofwider use of electric vehicles. Broad use of electric vehicles will require standardization of the charger equipment used to deliver energy from the commercial power supply to vehicle batteries. This report summarizes standardization activities in Japanand other nations, describes technical guidelines for AC 200V Charging System for Electric Vehicles being developed by Matsushita Electric Works and other members of the Japan Electric Vehicle Association, and introduces power supply equipment forcharging electric vehicles developed at MEW.
