Striving for perfection: evaluation of the right lobe live liver donor. Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons

Live donor adult liver transplantation (LDALT) utilizing right lobe grafts has gained widespread acceptance as a life-saving surgical innovation. While this procedure is clearly of great benefit to the recipient, it poses risks of morbidity and mortality for the otherwise healthy donor. Overall morbidity, ranging from minimal to serious, has occurred in one third of all donors. Deaths have resulted from either technical failures or early post-operative problems and underscore the reality that right lobe donor hepatectomy is associated with the small but real possibility of donor mortality that may approach 0.5%.
