Achieving environmental justice: perspectives on the path forward through collective action to eliminate health disparities.

Since the Executive Order on Environmental Justice in 1994 "Federal Actions to Address Environmental Justice in Minority Populations and Low Income Populations" (EO 12898), the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has initiated several actions to address disparities in environmental health. One of the agency's most influential activities to date is working toward integrating environmental justice in regulatory development. As a regulatory agency with a mandate to reduce environmental health disparities (under EO 12898) and protect health and the environment, regulatory development presents a unique opportunity to ensure that by design, EPA's standards and required practices for regulated entities prevent or reduce the systematic distribution of harm to any population group or community.
