Effect of Fusarium graminearum toxigenicity of Fusarium head blight of winter wheat

Toxinogenic monoconidial isolates of F. graminearum [Gibberella zeae] were studied in field trials in Russia by inoculation of winter wheat at anthesis. The number of heads with fusariosis at harvest was 2 times higher for inoculum with toxinogenicisolates. No significant differences were observed in the yield between isolates, but deoxynivalenol [vomitoxin] content in the grain was 8 times higher in those inoculated with toxigenic isolates. Infection was responsible for low germination capacity and decreased growth of shoots and roots.
