This special issue contains 4 papers presented at the subplenary session 141, which was convened during the last IUFRO World Congress, August 2005 in Brisbane, Australia. The four papers demonstrate various aspects of forest management under different environmental and social conditions. They show how multiple demands can be balanced, how spatial objectives can be coordinated, and how varied forms of expertise can be integrated in the design of a forested landscape. The first paper gives an example of Forest Stewardship Council Certification of industrial plantation forests. The second paper presents some new findings about the impact of forest management on the carbon budget of European beech (Fagus sylvatica) forests managed in a shelterwood system and a selection system. The third paper deals with the important topic of managing community forests with timber production objectives. Finally, the last paper discusses how different objectives can be achieved simultaneously using the multiple path theory of forest design..
