Even before the trees start to unfurl new growth, the bees start rearing young again. At first the patch of brood is small, perhaps the size of toddler's palm. With a few warm days, the world outside is tricked into believing spring has come. Snowdrops, crocus and daffodils peak their heads out. If the sun warms the front entrance of a hive, a few brave foragers will venture forth in search of fresh pollen. The bees won't venture far at this time of year, so it is best to provide them with a pollen source within 300 yards of the apiary.
