Some still think we use pesos or ride burros. While others are amazed that we speak English without accents and sing our Spanish like a song. Though we are the fifth largest state by area, we are sparse on people and on water. New Mexico may be on the quiet side, but we roar with vast landscapes of diverse microclimates, and have three main raices (races) weaving through our landscapes in rich and deep cultural traditions: the Natives, the Spanish and the Anglos. Largely populated by Hispanic and Mestizo peoples (mixed heritage). New Mexico is as diverse in peoples as their blooms. Water is scarce throughout the state. The mighty Rio Grande courses through its length—sharing water with the valleys from the Rocky Mountains' alpine sources to the lower desert valleys. Dependent on rain for life— the ancients of the land leamed to "read" the landscape and dug ditches or acequias to help move water from high lands to low lands through the breadths of the valleys. New Mexico waterways cascade down mountains, across mesas and plateaus and slink down to the meandering valleys— bringing much needed water for crops and livestock and also for its peoples.
