Miyajima Public Aquarium started full-scale breeding of finless porpoise in 1980，then the first reproduction in captivity was success in 1987. All the 15 neonates have been born at the aquarium, until end of 2013. We think, for success of captive reproduction, it is important to keep high success rate in pregnancy and good breeding environments. To keep reproductive physiology of captive porpoises normally, we synchronize lighting cycle in breeding area to natural daylight cycle. Furthermore, we made a special breeding tank to protect mothers and neonates from other animals, especially males. From these, we have good experience for captive reproduction of finless porpoises. Here, I show approaches of Miyajima Public Aquarium to the porpoise breeding and captive reproduction.
