Sea and Nature are Always with Us. -Everything's Better with a Little Awe of the Sea and Nature-

In the long history of the Bulletin of the Society of Sea Water Science,Japan,this is the first issue to describe and report everything completely in English,and I am very honored to have been invited to write the preface.When disseminating information about our country overseas,the importance of doing it in English cannot be emphasized enough,as it will lead to enhancing the presence of this journal and,in turn,the Society,worldwide. Needless to say,Japan is surrounded on all sides by the sea,and we Japanese,therefore,have a deep relationship with seawater and salt and have cultivated a unique culture based on that relationship-production of salt from seawater is obvious,and with no intention of antagonizing opposing countries,whale hunting has provided us with a source of food.The sea has reigned over our life and has been generous to us,not only in terms of fishery resources but also natural resources and various types of energy.If,for example,we can learn to use methane hydrate effectively,we will no longer have to worry about energy problems.
