There were tough times ahead for the Marsh lionesses when two blond-maned males strode into their territory. A dozen lionesses and their cubs lie sprawled in the shade of our vehicle. They are so close that Angie and I can hear them breathing-short sharp pants of breath, slowing now that they have found shade. Every so often one sneezes or clouts her head on the underside of the car. Each is different, both physically and in temperament. Some are placid, others touchy and aggressive, quick to react.Some are better hunters, and some are braver than others, quicker to challenge strangers on their territory. Getting to know the big cats as individuals is part of the joy of spending time in Kenya's Masai Mara.
