Certain issues of the work of the sixth committee at the fifty-sixth general assembly

During the fifty-sixth session of the General Assembly in 2001, the Sixth Committee faced an unusually heavy workload since sixteen items were allocated to it, among which the question of terrorism attracted the main interest and directly involved the United Nations legal counsel Hans Corell. The following report deals with a selected group of problems raised in the committee's discussion that are of interest from the point of view of international law and deserve further reflection. These problems relate to the calls for widening the membership of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), the scope of applicability of the Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel, the definition of the crime of terrorism, and, finally, the permissibility of so-called late reservations.
