Effect of mechanical pressure on lead-acid battery positive plates is reviewed. In a flooded system, flat plate batteries which had glassfiber mat sheets on both surfaces of the positive plates, and were assembled with proper compression, showed long service lives in the field comparable to those of the tubular ones. A function of the tubes of tubular plates was examined in terms of holding pressure, and was compared with that of compressed glassfiber mat. The author also refers to compression on positive plates in a starved system.
