Magnetic sensors are widely used in fields related to the environment, security, medical appliances, information technology, automobiles, and more, and at several billions of dollars, the market scale of magnetic sensors is very large. Magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) show a large tunnel magneto-resistance (TMR) effect and can be used as highly sensitive magnetic sensor devices. An MTJ-based sensor is a promising spintronic device due to its high sensitivity, small size, low power consumption, and low cost. Recently, the sensitivity of MTJ-based sensors has been dramatically improved and a revolution in the market of magnetic sensors brought about by the realization of high-performance MTJs is expected. Our company aims to apply MTJ-based sensors to the health care and medical fields, and we have already developed prototype pulsewave meters using an MTJ-based sensor.
