The Leeds Dental Illustration Unit has been running for over 60 years after being established in the early 1950s by Professor Talmage Read, who decided a photographic department was required as part of the School of Dentistry at the University of Leeds. Len Jepson, a then qualified technician in the pathology department with an interest in photography, was sent to Leeds Technical College to gain his photography qualifications and head up the department. The department merged with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the late 1970s, moving to a dedicated building to become the Leeds Dental Institute. Following Len Jepsons retirement around 1984, the department was headed by Angus Robertson MBE. Angus Robertson went on to have an illustrious career, being awarded the Norman K Harrison Gold Medal by the IMI in 1993 and going on to gain an MBE in the Queens New Year's Honours in 2009. He retired in 2014 after a career in clinical photography spanning 36 years.
