Pictorial Tiles in Pubs: Part 1 - Scotland,Wales and Ireland

In Glazed Expressions No. 69 we took a look at the way tiles and faience were used to embellish bar counters in pubs arinmd 1900. Such treatment was quite unusual and so is the theme of the present articles -the first of a planned series - examining she way pictorial tiles were used to embellish drinking establishments throughout the British Isles. It catalogues the examples ft) be found in Scotland, Wales and Ireland, all except one of which date from the period 1898-1904 and,therefore,the golden age of pub-building.
