An analytical method using a liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer equipped with atmospheric pressure chemical ionization interface (LC-APCI/MS) was developed for the detection of pesticide residues in water. Water samples were extracted by solid phase adsorbents (PS-2 cartridge) using auto-concentrators. The recoveries of 22 pesticides fortified at 10μg/litre or 30μg/litre ranged from 81 to 103% (pure water) and from 71 to 127% (river water), except for etofenprox. The limits of detection in water were 0.02-0.3μg/litre. It was necessary to use gas chromatography to analyse polar or thermal labile pesticides (asulam, benzimidazole, trichlorfon and sulfonylurea herbicides) after derivertization.
