Sonangol given new Angolan block with Lontra project

Angola's Sonangol looks set to be going it alone for the development of the giant Lontra gas field off the country after the government handed it operatorship of this and another deep-water block. Sonangol is buying out Cobalt International's 40% stakes in Blocks 20 and 21 for a total of US $1.75 Bn and is to sell on some of this stake to a mystery buyer that is the subject of a host of rumours because of the interest in the Cameia development in Block 21 (see story pg 1). However, in the meantime the Angolan government has carved out the Lontra field from Block 20 to create 89sq km Block 20/15 and handed it to Sonangol to operate.
