Possibilities of application of recombined lysostaphin as an alternative agent in the therapy of Staphylococcus aureus mastitis.

The aim of studies was to check the therapeutic activity of recombined His - tagged lysostaphin towards S. aureus bovine mastitis. Ten cows with S. aureus infected mammary glands were selected for the lysostaphin activity test. Based on the determined value of somatic cell counts (SCC) in milk, the animals were classified into three groups: sub-clinical mastitis (SCC <1.2x106 . ml-1), "week clinical" mastitis (SCC in the range of 1.2-1.8x106 . ml-1) and serious clinical mastitis (SCC >1.8x106 . ml-1). For three times after a previous milking, each quarter of a mammary gland of each cow was injected with about 8 ml of enzyme solutions (0.5 mg.ml-1). Two cows with a serious clinical mastitis were not cured. The S. aureus elimination pace at cows classified to the other groups was 87%. The obtained results indicate that this enzyme could be potentially used as an alternative agent in S. aureus sub-clinical mastitis.
