In a modernization of loopers in a hot strip mill, the control system was tested using a simulation model prior to commissioning. The hardware concept and the main features of the simulation model are presented, and test results are compared with real plant behavior. The modernization of rolling mills has gained increasing importance in recent years. In some cases, the controlling hardware reaches the end of its life cycle so that its replacement, together with the related software, is inevitable. In other cases, mechanical components are replaced - for example, to increase the rolling stability for smaller strip thicknesses. In this process, SMS Demag supplies high-quality mechanical and hydraulic equipment. The demands on modernization projects have increased. Mill operators require short downtimes and a fast restart of production. This minimizes the available time for commissioning and optimization of controlling equipment. To optimize these processes, SMS Demag created a "Hardware in the Loop" simulator that allows testing of the new controller equipment prior to installation under conditions close to reality. With the Hardware in the Loop test completed, the new hardware and software can be installed in an optimized state.
