Here in Europe Japanese carmaker Subaru discovered a beckoning market niche well before anyone else. Prior to today's 4WD craze, Subaru already stood out as a 4×4 pioneer. So much so in fact, to paraphrase Henry Ford, back in the late 1970s you could have any Subaru as long as it had permanent four-wheel-drive. Yet, whichever way its European presence is analysed, Subaru clearly failed to cash in fully on the continuing European love-affair with all things 4WD and Crossovers in particular.
