摘要

Introduction Plants contain several non-protein amino acids as secondary metabolites as defense mechanism from various biotic and abiotic stresses. Lathyrus sativus (L sativus) is a leguminosae plant also known as grass pea or khesari dhal, having a rich source of proteins and carbohydrates including starch, dietary fibers, vitamin B group, and mineral compounds, which are important nutritive compounds . In addition to this, there are two major unusual amino acids, p-oxalyldiamino propionic acid (beta-ODAP) and homoarginine present in L sativus seeds, among which p-ODAP is assumed to be associated with the motor neuron disease neurolathyrism, a form of spastic paraparsis (Rao, Sarma, Mani, Raghunatha Rao, & Sriramachari, 1967). However, the L. sativus pulses have been continuously cultivated and consumed in several regions around the world. It is reported that p-ODAP accumulation occurred in drought and famine conditions. Staple consumption of this pulse is suspected to be responsible for the tox-icity to animals as well as in humans. However, the neurotoxicity of p-ODAP in humans is still under debate.
