Does Parent Report of Behavior Differ Across ADOS-GClassifications: Analysis of Scores from the CBCL and GARS

Behavior checklists are often utilized to screenfor Autism Spectrum Disorders(ASDs)when comprehen-sive evaluations are unfeasible.The usefulness of twobehavioral checklists,the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale(GARS)and Child Behavior Checklist(CBCL),in identi-fying ASDs was investigated among 109 children withAutism,32 children with ASD,and 51 Non-Spectrumchildren based on Autism Diagnostic Observation Sche-dule-Generic classifications.The GARS did not distinguishchildren with ASDs from those without.The Withdrawnand Pervasive Developmental Problems subscales of theCBCL were higher among children with Autism thanamong Non-Spectrum children.These CBCL subscalesalso had better sensitivity and specificity in identifyingchildren with Autism than the GARS. Results suggest thatthe CBCL is a useful behavioral checklist for screeningASDs
