Industrialized countries are driving all of the growth in global jet fuel consumption. Strong summertime demand lifted worldwide jet fuel use by 3.1% in July, with Europe recording the fastest growth of 8.4% as lowcost carriers expanded their reach across the continent and overseas. Ryanair’s exponential growth helped propel the gain of nearly 16% in the UK, but also led to pilot shortages that caused massive flight cancellations in September. France and Italy reported 8%-10% expansion, while Germany had the only shrinkage within Europe due to the bankruptcy of Air Berlin.
