摘要

Research over the past 30 years has demonstrated that the brain is an important target organ for estrogen. At the cellular level, beneficial effects of estrogen have been noted on neuronal survival, connectivity, and neurotransmission related to the learning and memory processes. These mechanisms complement neurotrophin-inducible plasticity and mechanisms that guard against the loss of cholinergic neurons critical to Alzheimer disease (AD). Recent animal and human postmortem data have rekindled the interest in estrogen's ability to prevent AD, and., growing clinical evidence testifies to direct effects on verbal memory.
