Sudden Cardiac Death of a 17-Year-old Girl: a Case Report

A 17-year-old high school girl was moderately active in a leisure sport group. A few seconds after being hit lightly on the abdomen by sport ball, she collapsed, became unconscious and suffered respiratory arrest. A teacher carried out basic life support immediately. A team of ground-based and airborne rescue crew identified the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) after 50 minutes. On the third day after the event, the patient died of cerebral edema as a result of circulatory arrest. Autopsy and additional investigations showed hypoxemia of brain and signs of shock in vital organs. In addition, evidence of cardiac manifestation of infection with parvovirus B19 was found. Conclusions Provision of identical extensive medical care in recreational sports as in professional sports would be highly expensive. Symptomatic therapy, therefore, during medical emergency situations in this area is of great importance. The main focus should be on a functioning rescue chain with high quality of initial measures and follow-up as well as sufficient resuscitation performed by laymen and supported by the rescue control center by telephone.
