Market research told Toyota that the Corolla name had become boring and staid, and that was just one of the reasons why the huge-selling Corolla moniker was abandoned in favour of Auris in 2007. Latin for gold, Toyota wanted to inject some sparkle of its own into its midsized car, hoping to steal away sales from the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf. And while we were promised edgier styling, what ultimately turned up was nothing short of disappointing and certainly not worth the name change. Toyota management did learn its lesson to an extent, so when it was time to replace the car with the second-generation Auris, Toyota's designers made it marginally bolder and its styling a little bit more distinctive.
