Normally the performance flagship of a model range will account for a tiny percentage of sales and acts as an image enhancer, but you could never describe the SQ5 as a niche seller, as it has accounted for between 18 and 20 per cent of Q5 sales ever since it arrived in showrooms in 2013. One of the reasons for this is that Audi priced it to be affordable, with some saying that it is too cheap. At its launch, the SQ5 cost a modest ￡1,335 more than the Q5 S line Plus 3.0TDI quattro, despite developing 67bhp more power, 511b ft of additional torque and shaving almost a second and a half off the 0-62 acceleration figure. And that's before you've even taken into account the extra equipment.
