PLUG-IN CAR GRANT DITCHED FOR PHEVS AND CUT FOR ELECTRIC CARS

The Government's Plug-in Car Grant (PICG) has been slashed with grants for plug-in hybrid models abolished altogether and discounts for all-electric cars reduced from ￡4,500 to ￡3,500. First introduced in 2011, the Department for Transport (DfT) said the PICG was designed to help stimulate the early market for ultra-low emission vehicles, supporting the purchase of over 160,000 cars. However, the decision to reduce incentives was branded "astounding" by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
