Nothing to fear from proposed ISO milking machine standard

Dr Eddie O'Callaghan of Moorepark criticised the International Standards Organisation (ISO) proposals for milking machines in the September 1 issue of Dairy Farmer. He was particularly concerned about the negative effect that they would have on high midi-line, relatively narrow bore systems. John Baines, senior milking machinery advisor at ADAS has a different view. The ISO proposals are recommendations, not regulations, just like the existing British Standards (BS5545 and BS5226) from the mid 1980s.No farmer has been farced to bring his parlour up to those, but if there were problems in a new parlour - fitted after their introduction yet found not to comply with them - there would be grounds for a consequential loss claim. However, such claims have been extremely rare.
