The townies are taking to the streets

Middle England is up in arms. The sedate seaside resort of Brightlingsea, in Essex, is currently in the throws of protest about live exports (right). Audrey Boyle visited the town to speak to the locals. The plight of veal calves being exported from the town has forced the Brightlingsea community onto the streets in unprecedented and unbelievable scenes of impassioned protest. But the animal rights militants are nowhere in sight. Ordinary people; old ladies in tweeds, shop assistants and whole families have rejected old-style lobbying and letter writing in favour of direct action.
