Latest figures released by Defra'show some bright areas despite challenging weather experienced throughout 2018.Faced with the Beast from the East and a generally cold, wet start followed by an extended heatwave and subsequent drought, 2018 ended up adisappointing year overall for UK fresh produce, though with some bright spots, Defra figures show.Volumes of fruit production fell by 8.9 per cent to 693,000 tonnes, though their total value fell only by 0.6 per cent, to ￡753m. Similarly in protected vegetables, volumes fell 5.5 per cent to 274,000 tonnes, though this could in part be ascribed to a2.8 per cent decline in area. Total value likewise fell 0.6 per cent, to ￡331m.
